About Dr. Forbes

Lael E. Forbes, MD, FACS, FASMBS is a fellowship-trained laparoscopic general surgeon, bariatric surgeon, and a medical weight management specialist practicing at New York Hernia Center, which has locations on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, Secaucus, New Jersey, and Greenwich, Connecticut. 

Dr. Forbes received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She then completed her general surgery training at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital Center and completed fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the world-renowned European Institute of Telesurgery (IRCAD) in Strasbourg, France. Following her training, she was recruited to University at Buffalo, where she co-founded and directed the UB Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

Dr. Forbes specializes in laparoscopic hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, and anti-reflux surgery, and bariatric surgery. She is well-versed in the latest robotic techniques, including the Da Vinci surgical platform. 

Dr. Forbes is board-certified and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as many medical societies, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), American Medical Association, and the Association for Academic Surgery. 

In addition to authoring book chapters, she has published research articles in prestigious journals and has both lectured and presented her research at national conferences.
